One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
We watched and discussed about the movie during BS today. If anyone's interested, go to this link to find out more about the movie.
I didn't know what the title really meant until I googled and found out.
Apple seed and apple thorn;
Wire, briar, limber lock,
Three geese in a flock.
One flew east,
And one flew west,
And one flew over the cuckoo's nest.
The ones that fly east and west are diametrically opposed to each other and represent the two combatants in the film. The one that flies over the cuckoo's nest [the mental hospital filled with "cuckoo" patients] is the giant, 'deaf-mute' Chief.
Now, back to the movie... it's set in a mental institution and revolves around McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) as he protests against the rules of the institution.
3 things really got to me...
1. The lack of respect in the way the medical personnels treated the patients.
It's almost as if they are non-persons, and are merely objects that get in the way. What the movie potrayed may just be really extreme but undoubtedly, in real life, there are still doctors and nurses (hell, even medical students) who show patients no respect. (I don't want to go into what happened to poor P and the conduct of S at KKB, but those people in my group will know what I mean)
2. The attitude of the nurses during sharing sessions.
I sincerely believe that listening is an important part of communication and a person should not be asking questions just for the sake of asking them. But then again, how many of us are guilty of the above?
3. The electrocution and lobotomy.
A violent mental patient is still human. Electrocuting him is cruel, but to lobotomise him is totally uncalled for.

That was an excellent movie, and Nicholson deserved his Oscar. And we all know some people who would benefit from a lobotomy.
