The Lack of Updates
Yes yes... there hasn't been many updates on my blog recently. There weren't be, actually, until I get back from Kuala Kubu Baru on Saturday (Yeah, I'm going to KKB again).
I've been really busy with NHSD these days, and will be heading off to KKB after NHSD tomorrow evening. Loads to blog about, but I'll only write when I get back ok? :)
Before I end off, a little bit on what happened at the end of today:
Elena: *calling Adeline who left earlier* Eh, IMU 2 broke. Sheena's team. Oh, another team also. IMU 1? Er.. or 4 ah?
Us: (in the background) 3!
Elena: Er.. ya, think it's IMU 3.
Adeline: (from the other side) Isn't that me???
Me: *snatches phone* webrokewebrokewebrokewebroke!!!
I guess quarters is most probably the furthest I can go. I'm super happy that I'm even in the quarters (loads happened these 2 days, will update when I come back) Personally, I think Adeline and I have done our best and I'm happy. :D (Although we will definitly be even happier if we get into semis tomorrow)

Dildos vs Guys
After the last preliminary round today, we were sitting around, waiting for the breaking results when a debate started among the IMU debaters on the motion that THBT guys are dumb and it somehow evolved into THBT dildos are better than guys. Here's something S came up with...
S: Ladies and gentlemen, THBT dilsos are better than guys. I will cover this on 3 levels. First, on the financial aspect, second, on entertainment value and third, on the peace of mind. blah blah...(she was going along fine and we were laffing like mad until she got to her second point).. On the entertainment value ladies and gentlemen. We say that with a dildo, you can maneuver it around and you can get one of the length and size you prefer. With a guy, however, you are stuck with the same thing, you cannot change it. With a dildo, you can buy a 8" one, 6" one, or any size that you find can pleasure you the most... blah blah...

Doing what's right & Doing what you wanna do
Decisions... decisions... decisions... It sucks, you know. There's something you want to do, there're choices you want to make but on the other hand, you have to do what is right and what's better for the greater good.
Looking at it from another perspective, who is to decide what's right? Who is to decide which choice is for the greater good? Who knows whether the result of making this right choice is better than the one which a person's desired choice? What about the other way 'round? Who will bear the consequences if anything goes wrong?
All these are just killing me... I'm filled with regrets about getting myself into it. You don't know what I'm talking about? Forget it.

The Other Side
In one of the many many workshops we were forced to attend in secondary school, someone said "It takes 15 minutes to give someone a first impression of yourself, but a lifetime to change it" It seems unfair, doesn't it? A short while and someone has already formed an impression of you... but hey, isn't that what many of us do as well? Many a times, we pass judgement about a person without knowing what the person has gone through, why the person acts that way... and sometime, just from the way the person looks!
Just as I was deciding how to deal with this issue, I recieved a forwarded email:
Dear God, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.
Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.
Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.
I won't attempt to like everyone I come across, but I hope I learn not to pass judgement without knowing the person better.

I google like mad for stuff and nothing relevant has come up so far. Will 'em relevant info please start appearing.. like.. SOON? HRMPH.

Bad Feeling
Have you ever had the feeling that things are going to go badly, no matter how much preparation you've put into it? 'Cos well, that's the way I'm feeling now. I'm feeling that way about GI exam tomorrow and about NHSD.
I cannot afford to flunk GI 'cos well... I calculated my average and it isn't anywhere near ideal. Yes, some people will tell me that I've been averaging B+ and A- recently, but hey, the horrible failure Foundation 2 Summative 1 is doing more damage that anyone can imagine.
As for NHSD, I don't even want to think about it. Nopez, not talking about the organising part... that's a given lahz. Wonder whether I should debate, actually.
Maybe I should listen to what someone said a few weeks ago... give up all those extra stuff I'm doing and concentrate on my studies.
ARGH. I'm feeling like crap now.
Doesn't help when I look up at the darn counter. ARGH ARGH ARGH.

Apple, Anyone?
Quite a few people will know by now that I'm planning on getting a new notebook/laptop and am actually considering getting a Mac. Why a mac? I don't really know. I like the interface, I like the fact that I won't kena virus attacks as easily and most of all... I want a change.
I still don't know 100% what I'm going to get... but since this decision doesn't have to be made till months later (assuming the Fujitsu doesn't die), I'm going to wait around and see.
Like any potential switcher, I'm worried... compatibility problems... blah blah and... about getting used to a different OS. Apart from the short short time on MS Dos, I've always been using Windows, of course I'm worried 'bout not knowing how to use another OS right? (Don't tell me that it's going to be idiot proof, 'cos I'm just not used to it lah)
I came to the library today and saw the solution to my problem. :D Six eMacs sitting in the library!!! Now, I can play with them for a bit and then decide. I love all these little coincidences in life. :)
Do not start a Mac vs PC flamewar here. Thanks.

The yPod has a new home
Shortly after I started Uni, Kor Kor bought me an 3rd generation, 20gb iPod. Someone in #KVPUG called it the yPod and Kaizer kept on using the name, and I kinda like it, so yupz, YP's iPod is the yPod.

Kor even engraved a message at the back. Sweet eh? :)
yPod came with a casing. It looks pretty sleek actually but there were 3 problems with it. Firstly, I can't see the display and have to take the yPod in and out. Next, it doesn't cover the entire thing. And lastly... no place to put my earphone cables when it's not in use.

See my problem?
I went online and searched for a new home for yPod and found the STM Cocoon some time back but couldn't find it in the Mac shops in KL so I couldn't get it for a long long time. Today, when I went to SG, I went to take a look at the cocoon... and fell in love. :)

This is the cocoon. The yPod's inside.

First, yPod fits into a skin.

Then... it goes into the cocoon proper, stuck with velcro. (Notice how neatly the earphones can be stored?)

The cocoon also comes with openings where I can charge in-case at one end, and plug in the remote or earphones at the other.
The cocoon fits 3rd and 4th gen iPods... that means, you get 4 different sized skins (15/20gb and 30/40gb for each generation). So now, I'm left with...

Oh ya, yPod is almost a year old already. In a way, this is the bday prezzie?

Crazy, crazy... Crazy!!!

As The Earth Revolves Around The Sun
We all know from primary school science that the earth revolves around the sun and the moon revolves around the earth, now, what do our lives revolve around? What I mean is, what are the items that rank top on our list of priorities? Has there been any changes? In my case...
In primary school, life was about playing, playing, oh ya, playing, making friends, being accepted and ya, playing. Results? Er... when Ma pushes me to study, I study. That's about it.
In secondary school, it was still a lot about getting accepted. (Yes, I was an insecure kid) But a main part of my life was about RCY, a very main part. I was willing to travel across the causeway at 5.30am, and return home after 9.00pm on Saturdays just for the sake of RCY. It was crazy. I was compromising my studies, but I didn't quite care.
In JC, something in my head clicked and I realised that I can no longer hope for decent results if I don't put in more effort in my studies. So, studies moved up a little on the list. As for the whole acceptance thing? It went out the window. I was more concerned about friends I have made. So, life went round and round around studies and friends. RCY moved down the list... all the way down till it disappeared off the list by the time I went to uni.
Nowadays, my life revolves around studies and Ma. Friends are important to me and I love my friends, but they are no where near important as Ma or good results. The fact that studies is of such high priority to me is most probably because of Ma too. So yeah, my Mama is the most important thing in my life right now. (Yeah, I'm a mummy's girl, you got a problem there?) Looking back... quite a bit has changed eh?
What is the single most important thing in your life?

New Course In The Uni
I went to the IMU website hoping to find an updated version of the academic calender but saw this instead.
IMU ANNOUNCES A NEW PROGRAMME - BACHELOR OF NURSING (HONOURS)
The International Medical University (IMU) is pleased to announce that it has received approval from the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to offer a full-time Bachelor of Nursing honours degree programme. The programme is scheduled to start in its Bukit Jalil campus on 23 February 2005.
First it was the new BPharm program, then the MSc and PhD programs... now, a Bachelor of Nursing too! Now, what does that imply for us current students?
- More human beings walking around. (yeah, the uni can be really empty-ish sometimes)
- More human beings in the library, after the not so many copies of books. (Thank goodness I bought most of the books I usually use)
- More human beings on the rooftop and in food avenue during lunch time. (Erm.. Sem 4 lectures are in the afternoon hor? Ok, will settle lunch in apt before appearing in uni)
- More human beings in the computer labs. (Nasioncom ah nasioncom... dun die on me ok?)
Oh ya, and more girls around. Bet the guys are excited. :P J/k
As for the academic calender I was looking for? Nopez, not updated. :(

ARGH
Maybe I should start moderating comments...but that will mean that I have to check my MT regularly???

Bloody Issue
We got our Haematology results today and I am so happy, I just have to post this. :D
I really thought I was going to fail. Considering it is the system I truly suck at, and the paper was very tough (by my standards), on top of that, we also heard that the failure rate was as high as 60% *gulp*. In the end, looking at the charts (AAD puts up a bar chart showing how the entire batch does for each system), we didn't do that badly. Apparently, there were adjustments done but well, I'll ignore that little rumour. (selective memory, you know).
By now, anyone reading this would have guessed that I did pretty well. Much better than I expected and more importantly, much better than I usually do, so yeah, I'm a happy kid today.
Thanks thanks thanks to everyone who helped. Caryn for mugging like mad with me, Palmdoc for asking me questions... and everyone else lah. And.. must thank all those people who had to sit through my gloomy grouchy spells after the paper. :D
This paper is different from the rest 'cos I sincerely thought I failed, that's why so happy so happy SO HAPPY lor...
Next up, GI.

We Talk Funny
It was ShuJ's birthday yesterday... HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL!!! :D ... and we went to this Vietnamnese restaurant at OUG to celebrate the girl's 20th Birthday.
During the dinner, some of us were discussing how brainy others were...
A: I resonant, nothing inside. The one dull.
B: And she ah, stony dull.
C: Ya, next time, can use her as comparison. Then you know what stony dull sounds like.
A: And D use too much, liquefactive necrosis already. Hyperresonant.
---
And when ShuJ got her present and we wanted her to guess what it was...
X: What's your provisional diagnosis?
Y: ShuJ, patient come to you with a complain. "Dr dr, I'm rectangularr... and purpleeeee" ('Cos that was how the wrapped up present looked like)
ShuJ: May I have permission to perform a physical examination? *Proceeds to tear open wrapping paper*
X: Wei, ask for permission first lah! How can you strip your patient like that???
Everyone: ROTFLOL

Anonymity, you say...
I understand how most people treasure anonymity when it comes to the internet. As a result, I've been getting tags and comments from people who call themselves names like "Anonymous", "Me" and "Passerby". ("3rd Person Observer" not counted, 'cos he did kinda say who he was) I love getting tags on my tagboard (Duh, that's what it's for right?) and comments on my comment box (double duh) but would really appreciate it if you use a nickname I can identify you with.
Actually, I'm also thinking of getting rid of my tagboard, or maybe hosting my own tagboard... what do you think???

Speak your mind... or not
Recently, Hanyi started a thread in the forum "Ever been afraid to blog about anything?" This topic was also on my mind when I spoke to someone last night, and I figured that this is a pretty good topic to be blogging on. :)
Long time ago, my posts were straight, to the point and I'll post about anything that I wanted to, with no regards for anyone's feelings. Nowadays, it's a little different, when I pick a topic to write on, I think about whether it will upset people (especially those I consider friends) who read my blog. I worry that my frankness will affect people. "Literary disguise" is definitly not my forte, sometimes I try, sometimes I even push the topic aside and not blog about it. I wonder whether that is a good way of going about it.
I rarely blog on current affairs, the reason is simple, I have stopped reading the papers, I have no idea what's going on in the world apart from whether it's raining outside my apartment. (I do go to the economist website once in a blue moon) On the rare occasions when I post on current affairs, especially the more controversial ones, I have been told by friends to be careful of what I say online, especially since I have my name in the url. Should I tone down? Should I start saying that is "right" in my posts? I guess the key is once again in being discrete. To quote Dr Cheah, "I think that sticking by your principles are important and standing up for what you believe is essential. We are certainly falling short in that department. I personally feel that there is little truthfulness out there about many issues, discussing them will be unavoidable in the future. Malaysians have to familiarise themselves with being in very uncomfortable positions that is a sign of maturity and greatness."
Hmm... maybe this isn't even an issue with me these days since all I talk about is how horrible my results are, how I hate studying and how near EoS is. :P And when I do go back to blogging about more serious stuff, I'll remember that I've been told that...

The New Law Enforcement Officers
Ex-gangsters to enforce laws
BY IAN MCINTYRE
KANGAR: Village bullies and former gangsters may be roped in to beef up the municipal council's enforcement unit, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.
However, they must not have a criminal record.
He said he was dismayed with the lax enforcement that has allowed the rise in a number of squatter colonies and unlicensed hawkers here.
“I don’t care what the critics may say. I sincerely want our enforcement unit to be beefed-up and strengthened with individuals who can earn the public’s respect.
“These ex-gangsters who are actually village bullies are the best choice,” he said after chairing a state exco meeting on Wednesday.
On his proposal, Shahidan said he was confident that his suggestion could be implemented.
He said the public had generally lost respect for enforcement authorities in the state.
Shahidan said there were ex-gangsters in villages, who were not holding proper jobs.
“We will engage them as our enforcement officers. With their presence, maybe our ratepayers and public will respect them and abide by the by-laws and regulations,” he said.
Source
Looks like now there's an alternative route to becoming a member of our law enforcement units... go be a gangster! Now, someone out there, please tell me why the village bullies are the best choice in enforcing law? And... how do you label a person as "gangster"? No criminal records? Er.. does that mean that people who know how to escape the law will be the best people to enforce law??? Hmm... at least they know some of the ways the criminals will try to run off right?
TV Smith has an interesting take on this.

What's my appointment???
This happened during one of the club's meeting...
S: I'm the secretary right? Who is my vice ah?
P: No idea (proceeds to give a list of possible names)
VP: Er... ya.. maybe (followed by the list of possible names)
and while the Pres was saying something, the VP was talking to someone else. In an attempt to get the VP's attention...
P: Oi, VP.. VP..
VP: *yak yak yak to person next to her*
P: *nudge VP* VP!
VP: Huh?? VP? Who's that?
P: You are the VP aren't you?
VP: Ya horrr...
Everyone else: LOL

Poverty
After watching the documentary on parasite infections this morning, it suddenly dawn upon me that poverty is really very scary. I really cannot imagine living my life in the conditions I saw on the video tape. By poor and poverty, I don't mean a situation where you cannot afford your dream car, dream house or even the latest gadget. Think along the lines of malnutrition (don't give me smartass comments like malabsorption) and slums.
Like I said earlier, the documentary was on parasite infections, basically, you get to see people getting infected by parasites, how those microscopic creatures enter their body, multiply and make them suffer. The part of the show that really touched me was the one where they talked about River Blindness (aka Onchocerciasis). You find a row of blind people holding on to each other's end, with an able-vision person leading them to the doctor's. On top of their inability to see, most of them also look malnourished.
Most of us have never experienced a day of poverty and all we ever see are video recordings which seems so unreal! In a way, it is difficult to believe that as I sit in my airconditioned room, typing away on my laptop, drinking coffee, there is someone else at the other end of the world who still drink murky water from the river, who still bathe in that same dirty water. Processing the water? Huh? What are you talking about???
Here's a part of the conversation that went on as we watched the video..
V: As if being poor is not enough suffering...
Me: It's because they are poor, that's why living condition is bad, the standard of hygiene isn't there... and that's why so many of them fall sick.
To any IMU-ians who are interested, the video tape is in MMS. Helps you remember your parasitology... not bad.

Adeline Gong
Just before the OSCE briefing this afternoon, Adeline came up to me and asked me "you cannot access the net from school meh?", mistaking my self imposed hiatus as a situation where I don't blog because nasioncom is down...
So, here's a post dedicated to Adeline, and the topic of the post, well... ADELINE. Heh heh...
Who is this girl??? For starters, you can catch her at her blog.
She's my batchmate but I didn't get to know her until Sem2 when we were thrown into the same PBL group (She claims that she misses me in PBL these days... wonder if she's just being nice). Also in Sem2, I started debating, she started debating, I started chasing her (and the rest) around 'cos I needed to coordinate debate training times (*glares at Sheena*). This sem, Adeline's the one running around... kesian the poor girl. 'Cos well, I know how horrible the job is, and in her case, it's not just about the M203 debaters, but all the IMU debaters. The lack of enthusiasm for most things non-academic and the crazy busy lifestyles we lead, one can only imagine how tough poor Ah Gong's (as she is affectionately known by Elena) job is. :)

Taking a Hiatus
Let's see... GI is in less than 2 weeks' time (if they keep it at the original date) and EoS in 60+ days' time, I really should be putting more time on my studies and less on the world wide web. (This is my nth attempt at a hiatus, previous ones never ever worked. Let's see how this goes)
Nevermind the impending doom looming in the near future, when I'm in Vista, I cannot get on to the various instant messengers, gmail or even Rantings. So... I guess unless someone does something, I won't be able to do much from my room anyway.
So... what's going to happen is that I'll be taking a short break from the net. Until nasioncom straighten things out and until I have completed a respectable amount of studying whichever takes a longer period of time. All, of course, dependent on my extreme lack of self discipline.
