Creating A Tradition
Long time ago, orientation used to be hell for juniors, it used to be ragging time, where seniors "take revenge". Why would anyone want to demean another individual? Why would anyone want to humilate another individual? The answer they give is hardly acceptable... "We kena this last time, so now it's our turn to rag the juniors" Some say it almost as if it's an acceptable fact. My question to these people is "Why do you want to continue with this vicious cycle???"
In my opinion, whether the seniors were ragged as freshies and whether the seniors were abused as children should not and must not affect the way they orientate the juniors. Orientation is FOR the juniors, it's about welcoming them to a new environment and helping them make friends and fit in. As seniors, we want to have our fun by teasing and kacau-ing the juniors, but it is important to remember to be moderate and to note that there are certain lines that must not be crossed.
Thank goodness, times have changed. My batch was the first to have what I'll call the "moderate orientation" and we did the same for our M204 juniors. In doing so, we have also created a distinct M2 orientation style. Some people may not like it... but as long as we believe in our stand in this matter, it's all that counts. When the M202s orientated us, they broke a vicious cycle, when we orientated the M204s, we created a tradition. I hope this tradition carries on...
All in all, I feel that demeaning another human being is wrong, and should not be allowed.

Indeed, it's nice to see that the orientation has toned down compared to the past. It's sad that Indra & gang succeeded in planting a few seeds in our batch to continue their "tradition of demeaning" though... Sigh...
I wonder will the next orientation be toned down too... Or will the past repeats again?

Thomas, that's entirely up to your batch, you know. :)
Posted by: YP at September 6, 2004 07:48 PM
Ya, and let's juz say that I've no hope of them being humane ppl. I'm shock at how sadistic some of them can be during the orientation...
Posted by: Thom at September 6, 2004 09:18 PM
The one thing I'm really happy about now that orientation is over is that I no longer have to worry about security and about dumb people doing dumb things.

ragging is an institution in the army! dang... won't forget mine but it was fun! at the end we laugh our heads out - more mental than physical. but ya, it was sick ;)
Posted by: Buaya69 at September 7, 2004 02:23 PM
Yeah, it's a sad, sad thing when most of the manpower has to be diverted to SECURITY for an INTERNAL event. Btw, YP, powderful quote: "When the M202s orientated us, they broke a vicious cycle, when we orientated the M204s, we created a tradition." Fuyoh!

Come out wif that after dinner on Sunday. not bad right? heh heh
Posted by: YP at September 7, 2004 11:53 PM
Some say that without ragging, orientations aren't orientations any more. That's why royal flushes and all sorts of stuff still occur without the orientation committee's knowledge sometimes.
A friend shared his orientation experience in a foreign university (that sounds more fun than ours). Like you said, orientation is for the juniors. It's about the juniors, right?
So, they sent the juniors off for a camp, a short one la to fit the budget... and let the seniors be the facilitators. The camp was not those survival camp or army training commando camp but a fun camp with games and stuff. The juniors and seniors really bonded well and there... mission accomplished.
That would be nice, no?

U know Eve, ever since u told me about this camp orientation thing, I've been giving a lot of thinking about it... And u know wat? I'm starting to really LOVE that idea...
But I have little hope that this will be realized in IMU... I would REALLY LOVE to see that happening in my lifetime though!!! Lol...
Posted by: Thom at September 12, 2004 03:45 PM
to copy another orientation idea is to lose what made your university your alma mater
shrug but that's what i think
Posted by: cm at September 12, 2004 07:50 PM
Well, maybe not "copy" why not adopt the idea and modify it to suit IMU such that you don't lose the IMU identity as well. Rightz? :) It's a good idea, IMHO, maybe some people can give it a try.
