Proud To Be Malaysian

9 March 2008

General Elections 2008 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Malaysian politics, and I am terribly proud of my countrymen making this happen.

When Pak Lah first took over as Prime Minister, people were excited with his promises with regards to zero tolerance for corruption and talks of a country built on islamic values, yet respecting our right to our own religion. However, it was proved time and again that these were but empty words. Corruption problems continues to rife in the country, there appears to be less and less tolerance for different races and religions. When his deputy called Malaysia an “Islamic country”, he remained quiet, and those who disagreed were not allowed to comment because this is a sensitive topic.

Honestly, no one knows for certain whether the opposition will do a much better job in Penang, Selangor, Perak and Kedah, but it is a “risk” the people are willing to take. This clearly signifies the people’s desire for a change, and their dissatisfaction of their respective state government (well, ex- now…).

I hope this will mark a new era in Malaysian politics, allowing a healthier political climate and hope for the country’s future. I am disappointed that I could not vote this year, but I am very proud of my fellow Malaysians who did and the change they are making.
