Public Service Announcement: MALAYSIANS ABROAD AND VOTING

26 February 2008

This is similar to the post on Sheena’s blog. I am hoping that by putting it up here, it will reach more people. (Do put it on your blog too and spread the message.)

Download this form and send it to the “Pegawai Pengurus” (Officer-in-Charge) of your voting locality, ie. the place you registered. You can check the details you need to fill in your form at this website.

Send the form, and wait for the reply.

For more information on postal votes, you can refer to this set of guidelines. You can also obtain a PDF version of the form and postal voting regulations here.

You may be living abroad or may have done so for a number of years. But if you hold a Malaysian passport, then do your duty as a Malaysian citizen. Make your vote count, have a say in the future of YOUR country.

I had a very hard time getting information about voting from abroad. I called Malaysian Students Department, who offered to send me forms to register to vote. All the lady could say was “I send you the form”, nevermind that I had explained that I was registered and have checked that I’m on the electoral roll. I now have a copy of the registration form. *roll eyes*

Malaysian High Commission is no help at all too! I called a grand total of 4 time, the first 3 times I was directed to a voicemail system, and the last time, I was told “contact SPR”.

As for SPR, I still have not gotten a reply for the email I sent them. I firmly believe that they should revamp their website to make information more easily accessible AND start checking and replying their emails.

There is no incentive to improve the process of postal voting. XXXX self censored, fear of ISA XXXX

Wait till you are back in Malaysia, and get brain washed by the local media, then you get to vote.

Cheng Hiang: well, I don’t know why information about postal voting is so difficult to obtain… :P Then again, I’m not going to speculate and risk ISA coming for me. ;)

Cheryl: To be honest, I don’t know, but if you read the regulations, it would seem like it. Alternatively, you could try to go back to Malaysia to vote (take a long weekend of sorts).. and save all the hassle. :)

i don;t think SPR is helpful at all… There are not really encouraging ppl to vote… perhaps they know that most oversea students tend to vote for opposition party… just an idea

Lin: I’ve been great! Thanks. :)

Acid: I don’t know… but it could all boil down to the typical way our public services seem to work. Uhmmm… as for how that reflects on the management (read: government) of these services, I leave that to the individual to make their own conclusions.
