Chinese New Year — A Long Overdue Post

13 February 2008

Right, time to put something up to push that depression post down now that Psych exams are over and I did get to celebrate Chinese New Year after all. Life hasn’t been all that unkind to me after all… ;)

*singing*贺新年,祝新年,新年啦,年又年,爆竹声声催的响又远。。。

This is what CNY has been about for the past week…

Eating, hanging out with great friends, and uhmm… a tiny (minute) bit of blackjack. ;)

Spent CNY eve over at Guthrie House… Great food, great company! Absolutely brilliant… Only downside to this was the Psych OSCE the following day, which meant I had to leave early.

Food… Glorious food

Gong xi gong xi
You can’t have Chinese New Year without the oranges right? :)

First day of CNY was at Guthrie House again. This time ’round, I did a bit of cooking as well. As usual, I’m not particularly impressed with my cooking, but everyone else seemed to think it was great. :) Hurray!!!

Yes… MORE food.
Note the red arrows. :) To be honest, Shie Ling helped me marinate the chicken the night before…

Chop chop…
And I know how to cook that chicken, but I sure don’t know how to chop it into decent pieces, so here’s the skilled chicken-chopper, Jeng Haw and his lovely assistant, Jia Li.

With that, we move on to CNY Day 2. We didn’t have any celebration per se, but there sure was a lot of fun. A group of us went down to Malaysian Students’ Centre and helped with preparations for the following day’s MSSNI CNY Celebrations. I was there from about 4pm to 2am, so that’s 10 hours. More than half the time was spent with chicken, washing, cutting, battering, deep frying… I thought I would develop chicken-phobia by the end of it, but thank goodness I didn’t. Some of the others spent hours toasting and peeling peanuts, which is a job I’m sure I’ll hate. Hehe…

Yes, more food. I know.
Here’s about half the food that was prepared that night. Stir fried mixed vegetables, fried chicken, sweet and sour sauce (to be poured over the chicken the next day) and muah chee… There was also sweet potato soup (番薯汤)and tea eggs(茶叶蛋)but they are not in the picture.

Most of us went back that night with a better understanding of what people with back aches go through. ;) But the response the following day was all worth it. Oh yes, we also had peanut paste(花生糊)and fruit salad that evening after the MSSNI evening…

And if that was not enough eating, Day 4 was also Tyng Hwey’s birthday and that was spent having Dim Sum (yes, the first meal out during the CNY period) at Lee Garden. YUMMMMMYYYY… We went into the restaurant before 1pm and got out well past 3pm.

Today’s Day 7, also known as 人日 or everyone’s birthday… and I’m cooking for some of us. There are lunches and dinners planned this Friday and Sunday (days 9 and 11 respectively) and I am sure that’s not all…

Ok, I need new clothes. 2 sizes bigger please…

*Credit to Jay and Aiman for the photos. I didn’t bring my camera… (there is never a need to if you know Jay’s going to be there.. heehee) and got the photos off them.
