On Vanity
18 July 2007Hands up, those of you who have worn and tolerated a pair of comfort-killing shoes and returned home at the end of the day with painful blisters and very sore feet. Or have gone through some ridiculously tormenting treatment plan to achieve the perfect skin, body or hair. Let’s not even go into the torture of wearing braces (something I thankfully have never had to experience).
“Beauty comes with a price, and most of the time, it is comfort.” - Harps
That’s what my housemate, Harps, would say when I complain about an uncomfortable but really pretty pair of shoe or any other torture-device-in-the-guise-of-a-gorgeous-piece-of-apparel.
My one major problem have always been hair. Sitting there for hours really isn’t all that bad… there are always books and magazines or my trusty ol’ TX. It is the “Remember not to wash your hair for 2 days, alright?” instruction that KILLS me. I am the type of person who washes her hair at least once a day (yes, even when I’m in Belfast).
Malaysia = Warm = Sweat = Yucky Hair = OMG I WANT TO DIE
I found something that is worse torture than the most awkward pair of heels and the no-hairwash instruction on the warmest days…
A particular beauty-center-spa place (whatever you call them) is having a promotion. RM49.90 for a trial, you can pick either a body massage, an electrolipolysis or a facial treatment and massage. One of my aunties went for the facial and came back happy, and since it is such a great deal, another aunt and I went yesterday (well, my poor geok yee was kinda forced into it.. :P).
Generally a very nice place, great ambience and all… my beautician was lovely too… but trust me, she is a monster in disguise. The facial massage was great, the first mask was relaxing (smells of pineapple! mmm…) and I was having a really good time until she mentioned something about the second mask softening the skin so that it’d be easier to get rid of any acne and comedones later on. First siren in my head went off.
“小姐,你很久没有去做facial了,对吗?很多黑头粉刺啊…” (Translation: Miss, it’s been a long time since you last went for a facial right? You’ve got a lot of comedones (black- and white- heads))
THAT was when the siren in my head went blasting… but it was too late. The lovely and gentle lady was going to reveal her true colours. She pushed that evil bright light into my face, look through the magnifying glass attached and got to work. She went through every spot of my face, patiently getting all the comedones out. It was terribly painful and must have taken at least 30 minutes. It took ALL my willpower not to scream or push her hands away.
Thank goodness for the last mask… that was really soothing. I thought I would have a terribly swollen face when I step out of the center, but it didn’t look too bad, just felt really sore.
Sheesh… we’ll do anything for beauty, it seems. Mummy even asked me whether I want to go for another session before the end of summer hols. *gulp*
In other news… I signed up for a spa thing, which I plan to go for next week. At least I know that will just be relaxing and not a torture session. PHEW…

OMG SYP!!! please do not go for facial anymore! they are monsters..evil monsters! seriously. they do horrendous things to your face.
I remember being traumatised and emotionally scarred after spending quite a fortune on facials (despite mom’s objection, i went ahead! see lah, too smart)
ended up with major breakouts, really pimple-outbreak and they stayed for almost 2 years. had to then spend a bigger fortune to see a skin specialist and went on doxycycline for months.
pls pls pls just stick to spa!
