Nerve Wrecking Wait

22 June 2007

I have never been as unsure of myself as I am during this exam. I guess it is because with the recent happenings, I found it difficult to concentrate while revising, and there were even times when my mind was drifting during the exam itself. With 5 minutes stations, the lack of concentration is one of the worse things you can have, trust me on this.

Now that exams are over, it is time to sit around and wait for the numbers and letters that can potentially determine your future. I firmly believe that this is the true nerve wrecking bit and to a certain extent, more stressful than the exams themselves. There is that helpless feeling associated to this wait. There is really nothing you can do to change things now… it’s all been decided, yet, you are kept waiting. You try to check for your results once every other day, they are not out yet… you continue waiting. *gulp*

And the way medical schools work seem to be that much more cruel. A few days after exams, they announce the pass-fail viva list. You get on the list if you didn’t do well for a certain paper or a certain component, yet, you didn’t fail by much. If you’re on the list, you kind of know where you stand… but no one I’ve spoken to so far actually wants to be there. If you’re not on the list, you count your lucky stars… then you start wondering… does that mean I passed or does that mean I failed badly?

Yeah, nerve wrecking eh?

*Addendum*
Results are out. Passed alright… but didn’t do as well as I would have liked, and didn’t do as well as I did last semester. Glad that I got through 3rd year, but can’t help feeling disappointed. Better buck up for 4th year, on my timetable, I’m doing the 2 most important rotations first. Gosh…

    Hi Yee Pei,

I know exactly what you mean - the waiting for results. It used to drive me to the ends of my tether.

My best friend left me when we were 21 and I’ve been told (through scientific research) that people know they are going to do whatever they’re going to do for a long time, once they’ve decided. And there is nothing a best friend or anyone could have done to change their minds. At most, the decision would be pro-longed. But it would still happen. I thought I’d share that with you. It has been 14 years now and I still love and miss her heaps. HEAPS.

    You take care.
