Miri: First Impression

16 May 2006

Like I said before, I was in Miri over the weekend for the Miri International Jazz Festival… I have been wanting to go to Miri for a long time now, especially since Sheena frequently tells us how great the place is, and how wonderful her mother’s cooking is. I can now tell the world that Sheena is right on both accounts, no exaggerations.

I have been to Kuching before, but that was when I was in secondary school, 7 years ago, in fact… so yupz, this is my second trip to Sarawak.

Miri seems like a quiet place, I’ll say a quiet town, but my Miri-ian friends will remind me that Miri had been declared a city this time last year, in fact, they celebrated city day and had a parade while we were there. I’ll say it’s quaint, but I remember from a KKB trip that friends said that “quaint” is a politically correct word for “old fashion and boring”. I’ll just say that it’s unspoiled. ;) You can find most things you’ll need, but there isn’t that constant stream of busy people that is guaranteed to give you a bad headache. There isn’t the horrible polluted air that puts you at higher risk of COPD. I forgot who said this, but someone in our group said, “the air smells different… maybe it’s because the air doesn’t smell.”

The beach in Miri is really beautiful, and clean. Step into the water and walk out… you’ll still be able to see your feet on the sand! Nope, none of that oily grime nonsense. With a beautiful beach comes a beautiful sunset…

You’ll have to read “more” for the sunset pictures.

The sun was just going down… part of it was still peeking out. Heh.

And then it decided to disappear altogether. This picture was taken a short while after the first, at a different angle, of course. We were all running towards to sunset, trying to get a picture before the sun disappeared totally. Looks like Grace did the best job of all, since she got 2 of the best pictures.

You sure you went to the right beach? Hehe … I live in Miri and my impression is the beach here is dirty.

And you are right, this place is definitely boring. Retirement village more like. At least it is clean.

HI Yee Pei.. haha.. too bad I wasn’t able to meet up with you when you’re in Miri… nice sunset pics… taken in Tanjong (beside the medan selera)?? :) Anyway, have a nice trip to China.

Yep, Medan Selera. (I should know, I parked the car there while 3 shutterbugs rushed out, papparazzi-ing the sun. Better that than any “star”, though, in my book. Bad pun intended.)

[…] From earlier this month, I have been busy with a series of things. Linda came to visit, then I went to Miri for MIJF, and a Chikin followed me home, after which I went to China. Managed to catch a little rest and off I was to KL meeting up with friends and of course, the all important convocation. […]
