Harry Potter Dan Gelas Api

17 November 2005

Yes, that’s what the BM title is. :P I should have put this up on wednesday.. but well.. better late than never.

It all started with Elena winning 4 tickets to the premier of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on Mix FM. She asked me whether I wanted to watch the movie, and if I wanted to, would it be before or after EoS. Not knowing that she won tickets and was actually asking me to the movie, I said “should be after EoS gua…”, and she nearly gave the ticket away. Phew… thank goodness it was alright in the end. :) Thanks, Elena.

So we drove off to Midvalley for the movie after lectures on Tuesday evening. Collected the tickets (which were really cool looking), had dinner, joined the queue to go into the cinema, got our phones confiscated, our bags looked into (sheesh, why the hassle, the movie was already available for download on BT ages ago) and finally into our seats.

Enough nitty-gritty, on to the movie…

Elena puts it best when she said “I feel unsatisfied” on our way home. It was below expectations and a lot of things we were looking forward to were taken out.

The Quidditch World Cup took up 10 (??) minutes of the entire movie and the only thing you get to see was the death eaters and the death mark. I was looking forward to seeing the mascots, the game proper etc. But well… *shrug* But I guess they thought it isn’t all that important to the entire story anyway.

The main bit in this sequel is the Triwizard Cup, but I really didn’t think it was well done in the movie. First task was OK. I liked it in the beginning but it got a bit too lengthy. Instead of winning based on skills, Harry seems to have won on luck. Clinging on to the window, almost falling a thousand feet? Err… Ya.. Bah. Second task was not impressive as well. As for the third, disappointing seems an appropriate word to use. One would have expected more emphasis to be placed on the final task, but instead of seeing the different obstacles that Harry had to overcome, all there was were the closing in of the maze walls. Harry mostly just walked through the maze. (Yeah, I know the fake Mad-eye was supposed to be helping him.. but still..)

The resurrection of Voldermort is like climbing all the way up to the summit of a mountain and you take another step and you’re falling off a cliff. The build up was good, the killing of Cedric Diggory was effective, but the entire scene did not paint Voldermort to the grand dark lord that he was supposed to be. I expected the death eaters to come crawling to him, trembling, really subservient, but nah… nothing of that sort. If anything, Lucius Malfoy seemed a little er… arrogant.

Then there are the extra bits that were funny but really, a waste of time. Harry trying opening the golden egg in the bath was fine, but Myrtle flirting with him for so long??? Dance classes in Hogwarts??? I mean, bumbling babbling band of baboons was funny, but a bit extra right? The time can be better spent on other things that they took out. *shakes head*

Overall, the potrayal of characters weren’t very appropriate as well. I thought Fleur was OK but really didn’t understand why they have to make Viktor Krum seem like an idiot. Teenie romance is b-a-d. (I hated it enough when I read it in halfblood prince, but why do they have to bring it up so early in the movies) Cho Chang is not as pretty as expected and the trio has grown a little too old.

What I liked in the movie was the arrival of the Durmstrang and Beauxbaton students (but a bit too much emphasis, don’t you think?) and the Yule Ball (Hermione is gorgeous)

Overall, it’s an OK movie, not bad. If your standards are a little lower, you may even say it’s moderately good. But nah.. not worth 11 bucks. Oh yes, read the book before you watch the movie or you won’t understand. But unless you want the disappointment Grace, Elena, Richard and I got, forgot the book the moment you step in. (Am I making sense? Er.. go figure)

Oh yes, and before I forget, to the family sitting behind us during the movie, Oi! Can SHUT UP during the movie??? I didn’t need a running commentary. And when I turned around and said “excuse me” it meant, “shuddup for the rest of the show, you’re making too much noise.” it did not mean “keep quiet for 5 minutes then resume running commentary” Sheesh.

i thought katie leung was really pretty! anyway, the mistakes started in the first movie, when the casting directors cast emily watson as hermione and the director decided not to give her bushy hair and rabbit teeth. the whole point is that hermy-ninny (why didn’t viktor krum call her that?) only became “beautiful” in gof! bleh.

i thought the movie was ok-la. it’s not often you get movies which live up to the book’s fans’ expectations.

too much emphasis on the wrong parts and not enough in others (i agree about the maze…mana tu sphinx?). i hated the fact that none of the mascots were shown. no veela! and fleur was supposed to be part veela! gah. and why did barty crouch jr appear so many times? he’s not supposed to! bleh.

did anyone notice the bad editing at the yule ball? ron was supposed to say something to krum which “ruined the whole night” for hermione, but that bit wasn’t there. it cut straight to her being mad at ron. *grumble* BLEH.
