Unique Reflexes

15 October 2005

Bicep jerk, knee jerk, abdominal reflex, pupillary reflex, accomodation reflex… the list goes on and on. These reflexes are not very interesting, they are so common, most people have them.

There’s another group of reflexes that’s found in a smaller group of people…students.

1. Yawn reflex — Lectures causes all muscles involved in the TMJ to produce a wide open mouth effect. Easily stimulated during boring lectures with monotonous voices.

2. Sleep reflex — Patient feels a strange longing to close his eyes and go to sleep.Elicited upon reading of reference books or lecture notes. Also frequently a natural progression of repetitive Yawn reflex.

3. Kiasu reflex — Wave a set of notes in front of patient and say, in the most convincing way, “This set of notes used to belong to [insert a senior top student’s name]! He says it was what helped him get his A in [insert subject of notes]”. Patient will feel a sudden urge to get that set of notes.

4. Concentration reflex – Seen when a lecturer says “THIS IS IMPORTANT, IT WILL BE IN YOUR EXAM!” Patient will turn his full attention to everything that lecturer is saying and will be frantically copying everything down.

5. Scream-for-joy-all-weary-forgotten reflex — A distinct feeling of free-ness and happy-ness. It doesn’t even matter if patient has not been sleeping more than 10 hours for the past week. This brief moment of euphoria is stimulated upon exam invigilators announcing that exam was over. If reflex cannot be elicited, try reinforcement by having an easy exam paper to begin with.

The sleep reflex is esp potent during boring afternoon lectures when the lights go off and the slides start showing (no power point in those days!)

one of my lecs had the “tennis ball” reflex.

if anyone shows signs of the yawn/sleep reflex in her class. said person gets a tennis ball thrown at him/her.

Hey, I discovered the dumb reflex and the breast reflex. Breast reflex works the same as abdominal reflex. You lightly touch the underside of breast and the breast jump.

Dumb reflex is where you try to hit the patient’s head with the hammer. If the patient block, he’s fine. If the patient do not block, he’s dumb.

Another test for Kiasu Reflex can be seen at the beginning/before every systems where all with positive Kiasu Reflex will storm to the library and grab all books needed.
